Interview

    • How long have you been working at the hotel?
      It’s a family business, and I’m one of the group owners. I left the business in 2001 to work in IT as CTO, and then came back in 2011.
    • Tell us about your hotel group
      We have 10 hotels (offering about 400 rooms) in the group in Fatima, in Portugal, with different owners. They make up about 10% of the marketplace in terms of available rooms – but we’ve more than 10% in terms of room nights sold. They merge together under the Fatima Hotel Group brand. All but one of the hotels is family owned, and many family members work for those hotels. The hotels are therefore very well managed.
    • How long have you been working with Availpro? Why did you decide to choose them?
      In terms of connecting to channels, Sofia Rainho (FIT and Revenue Manager) has been working with Availpro since 2014. She manages the rates, their composition, and opens and closes the availability.
      For me personally, it’s about three months. We actually have our own revenue management system that we built ourself, but we are integrating the Availpro API (application program interface).
    • What were the problems you were experiencing before choosing Availpro?
      Before we used to set the pricing manually, and open and close availability, now it’s automated.Our 10 hotels are mostly small, but we can be very competitive when it comes to selling. We have a single Point of Sale, and overall about six people working on revenue management. We work as a single hotel from that point of view in terms of selling, but often we need to sell a lot of capacity at the same time – so that’s why we use Availpro. A big part of the challenge for us is to cover all areas. Sometime it’s hard to sell the last two rooms.
    • What was the biggest impact on your business after selecting Availpro as your partner?
      For our integration with the Availpro API – does it work well? Yes, everything works like a charm. The IT support team are very professional in terms of building the systems, they manage to answer our questions quickly, and the rates are opened and closed very quickly. The API is flexible – we’re using about 50% of its capabilities and it’s robust – it’s not a problem. The Availpro team also created a test website and we worked hand-in-hand with them, they were very helpful. The big revolution will be when we aim for a real-time refresh rate.

João is one of the group owners of Fatima Hotels Group which is the largest representative of hospitality services in Fátima, with an offer of ten hotel unit family business.

He worked in IT in consultancy firms for ten years and came back in 2011 in the hotel family business. He holds a degree in IT and management from the ISCTE – Instituto Universitàrio de Lisboa.
